ABOUT THE BARRACUDAS SWIM TEAM (FOR FIRST TIME PARTICIPANTS)
To sign up for the Barracudas swim team, you do NOT have to be a resident of the Villages of Shady Hollow

To sign up for the Barracudas swim team, you do NOT need to be a fast swimmer or know all of the swim team strokes. All that is needed is the ability to jump in the pool without assistance and the ability to swim underwater comfortably. Also, due to safety concerns, the first 2 weeks of swim practice are a trial period, where coaches, parents and swimmers will decide if the child is ready or not for the swim team program. If the coach deems that the child is not ready for the team, you will get a full refund.

We apologize that we cannot give very specific requirements as to whether or not your child will make the cut. Every child is different and has different strengths and weaknesses. But, below are some tentative guidelines that can help you know if your child is ready for swim team or not:

Your child is probably READY for swim team if:
-He/she can swim under water (i.e. grab a toy from the bottom of the pool) easily and without discomfort;
-He/she can jump off the edge of the pool and into the water without assistance;
-He/she can make forward progress under the water in some way;
-He/she can follow directions in a large group of kids and can wait for his/her turn in a line.

Your child is probably NOT READY for swim team if:
-He/she needs help jumping into the pool, or needs an adult to "catch" them jumping in;
-He/she is uncomfortable going under water or putting his/her face in the pool;
-He/she does not enjoy swimming under water;
-He/she does not work well in a large group of children.

Here are some suggestions during this trial period (first 2 weeks of swim practice - April 30 - May 11th):
-Participate in the Quick Start clinic (tentatively schedule for April 25th and 26th, 4-6pm) so the coaches can see your child swim before practices begin and so that your child will be able to decide if he/she enjoys swimming in a team atmosphere;
-If it best suits your child, let him/her know that they are not officially a Barracuda until the coaches let them know during the first 2 weeks of swim practice;
-Do not purchase a swim suit for your child, if you have a hunch they might not be ready, until after the coach has let you know that your child is officially part of the team.
-Communicate with the coaches about your child's personality and progress, so they can best serve your child and help them make the team;

Again, for the safety of your children, the coaches have absolute say as to whether or not your child is ready for the team, even if they meet all of the "requirements" listed above. Also, some children catch on quickly and may make the cut, even if they don't seem ready per the "requirements" at the start of the first quick start or practice. Thank you for your understanding.
